Yorkshire Group wish to nominate Mike Williams for the role of VTTA President. Mike has been a member of our group for over 30 years and in his 60 years cycling career has been prominent as a competitor, race promoter and administrator; whilst he has been involved in most branches of the sport his prime interest has always been time trialling. He currently serves on our group committee as social secretary.
Mike took to cycling when aged 15 with Hull Thursday Road Club. He remained a member for about 40 years, serving in various official positions including eight years as President. He also organised open 10 and 25 mile time trials and competed regularly himself.
In 2001 he joined Pete Read Racing Team, later to become Team Swift. As retirement approached he continued racing but took on additional cycling administrative and organisational duties. He joined Cycling Time Trials (CTT) Yorkshire committee and served as District Secretary for nine years.
He has now stepped back from race organisation but during recent years has organised, on average, eight time trials per year – under the guise of Team Swift, VTTA and Yorkshire Cycling Federation YCF. He has organised the following National Championships – CTT 10 miles, CTT 50km 3-up team, VTTA 10 miles, VTTA 15 miles and VTTA 50 miles. He has assisted at numerous other events and been largely instrumental in ensuring the ongoing survival of Yorkshire’s only 12 hour time trial. Mike’s most well regarded annual promotion was the hugely popular Team Swift Charity 10. Over its seven years this event has provided hundreds of fast time trial rides and in the process raised over £20,000 for the Macmillan Nurses charity.
In 2017 Cycling Time Trials awarded Mike their Gold Badge of Honour for services to the sport.
Until retirement Mike was a teacher of mathematics and deputy head at his school. He is therefore a confident public speaker and well suited to high profile role engendering the respect of our members.
